The Wayback Baseball Syndicate (WBS) is a centralized, limited keeper, Diamond Mind Baseball (v12) simulation league beginning with the 1919 season. Our mission is to recreate an alternative, historical replay of the game of baseball.

Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — As voted on by the WBS Owners, Todd Wade (Texas Tornados) is named Owner of the Year. This is Todd's second time winning the award. Todd led the Tornados to a 93-61 record and 2nd place finish in the Doubleday League. The Tornados made their third trip to the postseason, but fell to Alto in the Doubleday LCS. Texas posted the best run differential in the WBS this year (235), finishing 2nd in team pitching (3.59) and 5th in team batting (.300). Todd's Texas Tornados also lead all teams in all-time regular season wins with 366.



November 1, 1922
Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — The 1922 Commissioner's Choice Team, selected by the Commissioner's Office, is announced today. Headlining the team is Kinnaird Street's star pitcher Red Faber, snubbed in the Pitcher of the Year award voting, yet leading the WBS with 23 wins despite his team's 6th place finish. Faber also led the WBS in innings pitched (343.2) and Games Started (45) while maintaining a 2.72 ERA and hurling 133 strikeouts. Babe Ruth (Bla), Rogers Hornsby (BB), Ty Cobb (Bos), and Charlie Hollocher (NO) all return as repeat Commissioner's Choice winners. Bob O'Farrell (BG), Ray Grimes (Wil), Milt Stock (Alt), and Tris Speaker (Wil) all made the team for the first time in their career.



November 1, 1922
Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — Middlebury second-baseman, Marty McManus is awarded the 1922 Dark Horse Award, selected by the Commissioner's Office. McManus anchored the infield for Middlebury, picking up the gold glove at second and leading the Moundsmen in base hits (214), home runs (18), RBIs (129), and runs scored (115), while posting a .329 average. McManus was also an At-Large selection to the Doubledays' Midsummer Classic Roster.



November 1, 1922
Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — As voted on by the WBS Owners, Blackwater's Babe Ruth and Button Bay's Rogers Hornsby are named League Most Valuable Players. The award is Ruth's 4th consecutive, and Hornsby's 2nd. Once again, Ruth has captured both MVP and Batter of the Year, a feat only matched so far by Ty Cobb in 1919 and Ross Youngs in 1920. Hornsby posted a .391 batting average, with 35 doubles, 16 triples, 34 home runs, 130 RBIs, a league leading 155 runs, and 15 stolen bases while playing 2B for the Benedicts. Hornsby also collected over 200 hits for the 4th consecutive season.



November 1, 1922
Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — As voted on by the WBS Owners, Alto's Dixie Leverett and Topeka's Eddie Rommel are named Pitchers of the Year. Leverett adds to his Rookie of the Year and World Series ring accolades after his pitching performance for the Wild Mustangs this season, going 21-8 with a 2.56 ERA in 274.1 IP, and picking up 2 shutouts. Rommel helped keep Topeka in the playoff hunt all season long, going 17-12 with a 2.84 ERA in 285.0 IP, with 3 shutouts, and joined Leverett in a Midsummer Classic appearance, the first of his career.



November 1, 1922
Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — As voted on by the WBS Owners, Blackwater's Babe Ruth and Boston's Ty Cobb are named Batters of the Year. Ruth won the award for the 4th consecutive time, once again leading the Doubleday league in home runs (37). Ruth also accumulated 48 doubles (1st), 19 triples (2nd), and 108 walks (1st). Ruth now has 183 career home runs, easily tracking to surpass 200 in 1923. Despite Blackwater's loss in the Wild Card Series to Texas, Ruth also hit 3 home runs in that series over 6 games, in his first ever postseason appearance. Cobb won the award in the Knickerbocker League for the 2nd time in his career, leading all batters with a .408 average, the 2nd time he has batted over the .400 mark. Cobb's 262 base hits eclipsed his prior single season record of 257 set in 1919. Cobb now has 947 career base hits and hopes to be the first player to reach the 1000 base hit mark. Cobb also hit 32 doubles and 18 triples, and scored 132 runs for Boston.



November 1, 1922
Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — As voted on by the WBS Owners, Alto's pitcher Dixie Leverett and Topeka's outfielder Hack Miller are named Rookies of the Year. Leverett led all pitchers with a 2.56 ERA, and finished 21-8. Leverett was also named to the Midsummer Classic Doubledays roster and earned a World Series ring with Alto. Hack Miller batted .312 in 140 games at left field for the Moosedogs, scoring 102 runs, with 28 doubles, 9 triples, and 12 home runs. Miller also posted a 27 game hitting streak this season.



November 1, 1922
Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — The 1922 Gold Glove Award Winners are announced today by the Commissioner's Office. Most notable, Santa Carla's Wally Pipp won his 4th Gold Glove at first base. Ray Schalk of Middleton won his 3rd at catcher. In the Knickerbocker League, Bowling Green's Dutch Ruether (P) and Bob O'Farrell (C) combined to achieve the first ever Gold Glove Battery. Boston's Zack Wheat and Williston's Max Carey return from last year to anchor the Knickerbocker League Gold Glove outfield.



November 1, 1922
Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — The 1922 Ballclub Most Valuable Players are announced today by the Commissioner's Office, as named by their respective owners. Babe Ruth (Blackwater) and Rogers Hornsby (Button Bay) both earned their 4th Ballclub MVP Awards. Dixie Leverett and Goose Goslin earned MVP honors as rookies for Alto and Middlebury respectively. Leverett led the WBS in ERA, tied for 3rd in wins, and picked up a World Series ring. Goslin, the #1 draft pick this year, fell short of the playing time required to qualify for a batting title, but his .397 average matched Sisler who did win. Goslin also racked up 31 doubles and 70 RBIs.

October 29, 1922
Alto, NM (WBSP) — WILD MUSTANGS WIN IT ALL!!! Sam Jones capped off his season by pitching the biggest game of his career in grand fashion, pitching all of Game 6, allowing only 1 Aces run on 4 hits and no walks, as Alto captured their first World Series title at home. Alto scored all of their 4 runs in the 2nd inning, as the first 5 batters of the inning all hit safely off of Hooks Dauss. Earl Sheely was the first man to score, and finished the series with a .364 average, best among Alto's lineup. Austin scored their lone run in the 7th, thanks to Ken Williams lead off triple; Williams scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Joe Wood. Outside of that, Austin never even got close. Alto owner Gary McIntosh has much to be proud of, as his Wild Mustangs also finished with the best regular season record in the WBS, a nice feat to pair with his trophy! 「boxscore

October 27, 1922
Austin, TX (WBSP) — Jeff Pfeffer gave up 3 home runs to the Aces' offense, but got the Game 5 win thanks to 9th inning heroics from his offense. Pfeffer took a comfortable 5-2 lead late into the game but gave up 4 runs late, including a pair of home runs by Ken Williams and Les Mann in the 8th to give Austin a 6-5 lead. Eppa Rixey was 1 out away in the 9th with no base runners when Alto came alive, their top of the order coming up with 4 consecutive base hits to recapture the lead before Rixey was pulled for relief. Reliever Tim McNamara made quick work of the Aces in the bottom of the 9th to secure the Wild Mustangs win, and a 3-2 series lead as they now travel home for Game 6. 「boxscore

October 25, 1922
Austin, TX (WBSP) — Hooks Dauss had a solid outing for Austin, allowing only 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk in 8 inning, to get the W over Alto and take a 2-1 series lead. Dauss also hit a home run in the 7th to snag the game winning RBI. Home run champion Ken Williams also hit a home run in the first, and has a .455 batting average so far in the World Series. Sam Jones pitched well for Alto, throwing a complete game, but it was not quite enough. With a 2-1 series lead, Austin has a shot at winning the World Series in front of a home crowd if they can sweep at home! 「boxscore

October 23, 1922
Alto, NM (WBSP) — Defensive miscues made the difference today, as Alto took advantage of Austin's errors to even the series. After a Rabbit Maranville triple in the 5th, Art Fletcher fumbled an infield grounder by Jeff Pfeffer with two outs, scoring Maranville for the first run of the game. Ken Williams drove in a tying run in the 6th, but Alto retook the lead on a sacrifice fly by Earl Sheely in the bottom half of the inning. Fred Haney's two-out error in the 7th set up an insurance run driven in by pinch hitter Hank Gowdy. Austin never put another man on base. Despite pitching a complete game, Eppa Rixey took the loss, while Pfeffer snagged the win, allowing 1 run on 6 hits in 8. The Wild Mustangs and Aces head east to Austin for Game 3. 「boxscore

October 22, 1922
Alto, NM (WBSP) — Game 1 saw Alto's rookie all-star Dixie Leverett lose his poise early, giving up 7 runs in 2.2 innings on 5 hits and 6 walks; 3 of his walks came with the bases loaded. His counterpart Dolf Luque pitched well to go all 9, and Austin won handily, 9-2. The Austin offense helped themselves also, batting 17 of 39 with 9 walks as a team, and spreading the run production throughout the lineup. Lu Blue and Fred Haney led the way with 4 hits each, including a Blue double and a Haney triple. Game 2 will see ace Jeff Pfeffer face off against Eppa Rixey. 「boxscore

October 17, 1922
Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — In a day of WILD LCS Game 6's, the Alto Wild Mustangs and Austin Aces both went 12 innings to win trips to their first ever World Series! Dolf Luque carried Austin for 11 innings, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks to get the big time W over reigning champs Button Bay. Amos Strunk drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th, and Jack Scott entered the bottom half in relief and quickly shut down the Benedicts to close out the game. Meanwhile in Alto, a home town crowd feasted on finger nails as the Wild Mustangs came from behind in the ninth thanks to a clutch sacrifice bunt by Sam Jones (who also pitched a solid 9) to move Rabbit Maranville into scoring position, followed by Pat Duncan's game-tying single. In the 12th, Alto rallied to score on a fielder's choice that scored Harry Hooper to lock in victory over rivals Texas Tornados, and their trip to World Series! Alto will wait at home now, as Austin makes their way west to see if they can continue their postseason hot streak!

Raleigh, NC (WBSP) — Both LCS will go to a Game 6, with Alto and Austin both holding a 3-2 game advantage against the World Series teams from the past 2 seasons. Alto will return home to host Texas, while Austin will hit the road to Button Bay to try and snatch away three-peat hopes from the Benedicts!

Blackwater, KY (WBSP) — George Uhle did it all today for Blackwater, pitching a 1-run complete game AND getting the walk-off hit that drove in George Cutshaw to come from behind in the 9th, snagging the must-win for Blackwater. Down 3-2 in the series, Texas hopes to get the series win in front of their hometown fans and avenge postseason disappointments from '20 and '21! 「boxscore

Hoboken, NJ (WBSP) — Dolf Luque threw a gem today, yielding only 1 unearned run on 4 hits in 8, as Austin has commandeered a 2-0 lead to return home with hopes of a quick Wild Card Series. Hoboken took a 1-0 lead in the first on a sac fly by Charlie Jamieson and Carl Mays held the lead until the 9th. Luque started the rally with a leadoff single, and left for pinch runner Les Mann who scored the tying run later in the inning. Ken Williams drove in Lu Blue for the go-ahead run. 「boxscore

Willston, ND (WBSP): Dolf Luque gave up 10 runs, includnig 3 homeruns, in 8.2 innings, but his teammates came up big with their bats to give Austin the win over Williston, securing the final playoff spot! Despite striking first with a homerun by Eddie Ainsmith in the first, the Wendigos could not find a pitcher to keep their team in the game. Urban Shocker allowed 8 runs and was pulled after 5; the bullpen gave up 10 more before it was all done. Luque finished the season with his 22nd win. Austin, TX (WBSP): Lee Meadows threw all 9 today to get a huge 6-3 win over Austin, putting Williston in position to snatch the last playoff spot in the Knickerbocker League, and possibly even a shot at home field advantage in the Wild Card series with a win tomorrow to tie Hoboken. Meadows also drove in 2 runs, while Joe Harris drove in the other 4, including a 3-run blast in the fifth. Meadows will finish the season 15-10 with a 3.99 ERA. Meanwhile, Hoboken and Blackwater have both secured postseason spots, and Texas needs a win paired with an Alto loss to tie for the top Doubleday spot! 「boxscore

New Orleans, NO (WBSP): Texas edged New Orleans 3-2 and are now only 1 game back of Alto, with 2 games left for both teams. Jake Daubert drove in 2 runs in the first for Texas, and Texas never trailed although the game remained tight. Down 3-1 in the ninth, New Orleans threatened, racking 3 consecutive base hits with 2 outs to score 1, but Hank Severeid flew out to end the game and stranded 2 baserunners at the corners. Despite getting in trouble, Red Causey closed out the game with the save, and Jesse Haines got his 17th win of the season to finish 17-10 with a 3.78 ERA. Texas needs a little help from Santa Carla, but hopes to catch or pass Alto for the Doubleday title. 「boxscore

Austin, TX (WBSP): Button Bay clinched the Knickerbocker regular season title today, their second year in a row, in a 12-3 route of the Austin Aces who now find them selves 2 games out of the Wild Card spot behind Williston and Hoboken. With only 4 games left, Austin desperately needs a spark to pull them out of a skid in which they've lost 8 of their last 10. Frank Brower had a big day for the Benedicts, batting 4 for 5 with a triple, 5 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Rogers Hornby pitched in, cranking his 34th homer of the year. Jesse Barnes picked up his 21st win of the season, best in the Knickerbocker lead. It was a rough outing for Aces' Hooks Dauss, who gave up 8 and dropped to 16-9. Austin stays home for the remainer of the season, one more against Button Bay, and 3 with Willison in what could be the determining showdown! 「boxscore

Amarillo, TX (WBSP): Texas won their 12th straight today, on a tear to catch first-place Alto, now only 2.5 games back. The win came in extras, on a walkoff single by Larry Gardner, scoring George Harper. With only a week of play left, 5 of Texas' remaining 7 games are against the last-place New Orleans Rougarou, 2 against Santa Carla; Alto will face the Bats in 4 games, and the Rougarou in 2. 「boxscore

Raleigh, NC (WBSP): With less than 2 weeks left of season play, the playoff races are heated in both leagues! It's a 5-team race in the Doubleday League, with only 2 games separating Blackwater, Santa Carla, Macon, Middlebury, and Kinnaird Street for the 3rd playoff spot! In the Knickerbocker League, Austin, Williston, and Hoboken are seprated by 1.6 games as they jostle for 2 playoff spots! The next 2 weeks will be drama all around!

Alto, NM (WBSP): Wild Ace Ken Williams slugged 2 homers today against Bowling Green, a day after doing the same against Hoboken. Williams drove in 11 runs over both games to accompany that feat. The home run binge has propelled Williams to within 3 of catching Rogers Hornsby who is leading the Knickerbocker League with 33. The Aces outpaced the Baron, 10-7, pitcher Hooks Dauss improving to 15-6 with a 3.09 ERA. The win extends Austin's winning streak to 4 games, keeping a half game ahead of Willison and a full game aheads of Hoboken, in a wild card race that remains razor thin. 「boxscore

Blackwater, KY (WBSP): Virgil Cheeves tossed a 3-hit shutout against Blackwater for Macon today, extending their win streak to 6 and getting back into the playoff hunt. The offense was a team effort, the top 6 batters in the lineup each collecting 2 hits and producing all 8 runs. Cheeves improved to 10-9 with a 4.10 ERA on the season. Bill Sherdel took the loss for Blackwater, dropping to 15-9 with a 3.96 ERA. With the win, 6th place Macon is 4.5 games back of the Wild Card spot in what looks to be a 4 team race with Blackwater, Kinnaird Street, and Santa Carla! 「boxscore

Button Bay, VT (WBSP): Rogers Hornsby snagged his 200th hit of the season today, marking his 4th consecutive season with 200 hits. But his 2 of 5 effort was not enough to get the win, as the Topeka Moosedogs came from behind to tie the game in the 8th, and win in 10. A rally of singles in the 8th were capped by Chick Galloway's 2-run single. Butch Henline drove in the last 2 runs for Topeka with a single in the 10th. Button Bay threatened in the bottom half, with Jack Smith driving in a run with only 1 out, but Topeka's bullpen closed out the game. 「boxscore

Alto, NM (WBSP): The Wild Mustangs won their 7th straight game today, pulling 8 games ahead of the 2nd place Blackwater Outlaws in the Doubleday League. Waite Hoyt gave up 5 earned, but lasted all 9, improving to 10-12 with a 4.20 ERA. Pat Duncan led the offensive effort, slugging 3 doubles and scoring twice with 1 RBI. Since the Midsummer Classic, Alto is 25-10, best in the WBS. Meanwhile the in Knickerbocker League Button Bay holds a 5 game lead ahead of a Williston team that could get hot and surge ahead at any moment. Williston, ND (WBSP): Clarke Pittenger's walkoff shot in the 10th finished off a nail-biter in Williston today, seeing 7 lead changes over the course of the game. Down 2 in the 9th, Joe Harris, Tris Speaker, and Ray Grimes slugged 3 consecutive doubles to tie the game and send it in to extras. Grimes finished the day 4 for 4, with 2 home runs, 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Speaker collected a pair of doubles to bring his season total to a league leading 48. The win over Bowling Green improves Willison to 63-47, 3.5 games back of the Benedicts, as Williston hopes to track down their 2nd league title. 「boxscore

Old Lyme, CT (WBSP): Moosedogs Tilly Walker and George Burns combined for 19 total bases, 7 runs, and 8 RBIs today, including a cycle by Walker. Burns fell only a double short of the same feat. Topeka won easily, 17-6. Despite allowing 6 earned on 12 hits, Alex Ferguson completed the game and is now 11-9 with a 3.40 ERA. Old Lyme picked up their 70th loss of the season, on their way to setting a single season team losses record that may never be beat. 「boxscore

July 8, 1922
Old Lyme, CT (WBSP): It seems the Midsummer break was too much of a break for Charlie Jamieson, whose hitting streak came to an end at 37 games today on an 0-4 performance. The Ticks eeked out nailbiter, scoring 2 in the bottom of the 9th in a 7-6 win over Hoboken. The Ticks held a 5-4 edge heading into the 9th, but Hoboken rallied on back-to-back triples by Del Pratt and Casey Stengel to take a 1-run lead. But in the bottom half, Old Lyme cobbled together some base hits, a sacrifice bunt, and a walk-off sacrifice fly by Roger Peckinpaugh to secure the win. Red Shea tallied a blown save and loss, while Jim Bagby notched a win, improving to 2-4. 「boxscore

July 4, 1922
Williston, ND (WBSP): HIT PARADE IN WILLISTON!!! Fans hoping to see a pitching duel at the Midsummer Classis were sorely disappointed today, as the Knickerbockers and Doubledays combined for 28 runs on 39 hits, the Knickerbockers coming out on top 15-13. The Knickerbockers blew the game apart with an 8-run 5th inning, all coming off Alto's Dixie Leverett and capped by Austin's Lu Blue's grand slam to open a 13-5 lead. Down late, the Doubledays whittled away, Blackwater's Babe Ruth and Alto's Milt Stock homering in the 8th. With Macon's Irish Meusel and Ruth on base in the 9th, and Meusel representing the tying run, Stock grounded out to the end the day. Home town favorite Wendigo Joe Harris and Boston's Zach Wheat also hit home runs for the Knickerbockers; Stock and Wally Schang each had 4 hits. Despite the collective absence of decent pitching, Topeka's Eddie Rommel strung together 3 shutouts innings for the Knickerbockers, allowing only 2 hits and no walks, and getting W. Due to a sudden illness suffered by Button Bay's Robert Gianduso who was slated to manage the Knickerbockers, home town owner Kyle Pope was on to hand fill in and earn a share of what is his 2nd Midsummer Classic win, in 3 appearances. Todd Wade managed his 2nd Classic. The Doubledays and Knickerbockers are tied 2-2 all-time in the Series. 「boxscore

Blackwater, KY (WBSP): In a possible preview of the postseason, Alto took the third game in a 3-game series against Blackwater today, but Blackwater won the series 2-1. Mike Menosky's grandslam in the 3rd inning was all Alto needed to win, 4-3. Jeff Pfeffer took the win, improving to 5-7 with a 3.10 ERA. Heading into the Midsummer Classic break, 5 teams are within 2.5 games of the top of the Doubleday League, and 4 teams are within 3.5 games in the Knickerbocker League lead. 「boxscore

Button Bay, VT (WBSP): Just a few days after shattering Carson Bigbee's recently-set hitting streak, Charlie Jamieson extended his new record today to 35 games, his sole hit coming in the 6th. But the Benedicts took the day, defeating Hoboken 7-3 in a solid effort by Jesse Barnes, who improved to 12-4 with a 3.48 ERA. Rogers Hornsby led the Benedicts offense, batting 2-4 with a homerun, 3 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. With the win, Button Bays sits 2.5 games up in the Knickerbocker League, with 3 other teams tied for 2nd place and hot on their heels. 「boxscore

Topeka, KS (WBSP): Fans in Topeka got a treat today, and not just 4 free innings of extra baesball! Chick Galloway setting a new single game hits record that may never be beat, going 7 for 7, including the walkoff single in the 13th inning to edge Hoboken 5-4. 「boxscore

Arlington, TX (WBSP): In a Doubleday League showdown, the Alto Wild Mustangs swept Texas today, surging to 2nd place. The 5-3 win came on the back of a solid complete game performance by Sad Sam Jones, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned. Alto is a favorite to go far this season, with the best pitching in the WBS and 3rd best offense. 「boxscore

Austin, TX (WBSP): Austin's Dolf Luque struck out 12 batters today, tying the WBS single game record also held by Macon's Howard Ehmke; however Ehmke needed extra innings to accomplish the same feat back in 1920. Despite the performance, Luque got little help from the Aces' offense, losing 4-1 to Topeka and falling to 7-2 on the season. But Austin still sits atop the Knickerbocker League, a game and a half ahead of reigning champs Button Bay. 「boxscore

Bowling Green, KY (WBSP): The Barons routed Topeka today, 13-5, with a monster performance by Harry Heilmann. Heilmann went deep in the first with a 3-run blast, and Bowling Green never looked back. Heilmann finished with 3 homeruns, 7 RBIs, and 4 runs scored. Reliver Harry Shriver picked up the win, and Moosedog rookie Dazzy Vance took the loss. 「boxscore
