NEWS FEED WBS Awards Announced Todd Wade is named WBS Owner of the Year, leading the Texas Tornados to a 102-52 record and a trip to the the World Series. Wade also led the Georgetown Giants up until after midseason, and the Giants finished 108-46. Both of Wade's teams captured regular season titles. Blackwater's Babe Ruth and Georgetowns's Ross Youngs were both voted Most Valuable Player and Batter of the Year respectively in the Doubleday and Knickerbocker leagues. Ruth batted .371, leading all players with 57 homeruns and 158 RBIs. Youngs led all batters with a .416 average, while slugging 46 doubles and stealing 26 bases. Pitcher of the Year honors go to New Orleans' Pete Alexander and Georgetowns's Carl Mays. Alexander finished 23-15 with a 2.40 ERA, 5 shutouts, and 199 strikeouts. Mays won 30 and only lost 5 with a 3.33 ERA and 22 complete games. Texas pitcher Jesse Haines and Williston second basebman Bucky Harris were voted Rookie of the Year. Haines went 25-10 with a 2.89 ERA, helping the Tornados to the World Series, finishing 2nd in the league with 153 strikeouts. Harris put up a solid first year, batting .276 with 27 doubles, 19 stolen bases, and scoring 84 runs and driving in 80. The Commissioner's Choice Team is announced as follows: Team MVPs are announced as follows: Doubleday League team MVPs Knickerbocker League team MVPs World Series [results] Benedicts defeat Tornados 4-3 October 30, 1920 Arlington, TX (WBSP): Button Bay did the unthinkable today, a dark horse run culminating in late inning come back to upset the heavily favored Tornados 5-3! Joe Sewell's clutch triple in the 8th tied the game, and Sewell scored the go-ahead run on Frank Cruise's sacrifice fly. The Benedicts tallied an insurance run in the top of the ninth, but the damage was done. All hopes in Arlington hung on Joe Jackson in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not to be as closer Dusty Mails struck out Jackson for his 3rd save and to end the Series. [boxscore] October 27, 1920 Button Bay, VT (WBSP): Elmer Myer held off a ninth inning Button Bay rally, hanging on to a 6-5 win to take the series back to Texas with a 3-2 series Tornados lead. Down 6-3 in the ninth, all-stars Buck Weaver, Rogers Hornsby, and Steve O'Neill fueled the Benedicts' late rally, but fell just short, stranding Hornsby on third and the go-head run O'Neill on first. Frank Ellerbe produced for the Tornados, driving in 3 runs on a double and triple. The Tornados head home with a 3-2, on the verge of a World Series Championship, but Button Bay's late surge could spoil their final homestand! [boxscore] October 26, 1920 Button Bay, VT (WBSP): Benedicts tied up the Series today and Eddie Cicotte shut down the Tornados lineup. Cicotte pitched 8 scoreless before the Tornados tried to rally in the 9th but came up short. The Benedicts bats were healthy, batting 16 of 36 in the 8-2 win. With the Series tied, the Button Bay hopes to sweep at home before returning to Texas. [boxscore] October 25, 1920 Button Bay, VT (WBSP): Jesse Barnes finally shut down the Tornados' bats today, getting a needed 3-1 win for the Benedicts. Barnes allowed only 6 hits over 8 innings, edging Stan Covelski in the effort. Frank Brower tripled in the first to drive in the first run, and the Benedicts did not look back. Tomorrow Button Bay hopes to even the series. [boxscore] League Championship Series [results] Tornados defeat Grackles 4-3 Benedicts defeat Giants 4-3 October 18, 1920 Georgetown, TX (WBSP): Frank Brower brought his bat to Texas, unleashing 5 hits and a batting the cycle, fueling Button Bay's Game 7 win over Georgetown 16-9. Brower collected 6 RBIs and 3 runs. The Benedicts ran away and never looked back, carrying a 15-2 lead into the 8th. Late rallies by the Giants were too little, too late. The Benedicts will celebrate their Knickerbocker League Championship in Texas, only a short ride away from their next game where they will face the Texas Tornados in the World Series. [boxscore] October 18, 1920 Arlington, TX (WBSP): The Texas Tornados finished business today and punched their World Series ticket, as Stan Covelski shutdown the Grackles in a 7-1 win. Joe Jackson batted 3 for 4 with a triple, collecting his 11th RBI of the series and leading both teams with a .576 series batting average. Jackson and the Tornados will rest at home and prepare to host the Benedicts, where Jackson will face off against his former Topeka teammate Eddie Cicotte. [boxscore] October 15, 1920 Galesburg, IL (WBSP): In a real team effort today, the Grackles offense spread out 8 runs on 14 hits, with every starter picking up a either a hit, run, or RBI, including starter Elmer Ponder who picked up the complete game win and scored a couple of runs. The Grackles carry a 4-3 lead back to Arlington for Game 6, hoping to stun the Arlington fanbase. [boxscore] October 15, 1920 Button Bay, VT (WBSP): A second-inning, 6-run rally by the Benedicts set up late season acquisition Eddie Cicotte for fairly smooth sailing as he pitched all nine and only allowed 2 earned runs by the Giants. The Game 5 positions the Benedicts to pull off a major upset as they head back to Georgetown where the Giants need a sweep at home to keep their dominant season. [boxscore] October 10, 1920 Georgetown, TX (WBSP): The Benedicts outlasted the Giants in an offensive marathon today scoring the last 3 runs to win 15-14 thanks to a go-ahead double by Buck Weaver in the top of the ninth. Rogers Hornsby and Mike Menosky pitched in with 5 RBIs each, with Hornsby batting 4 of 7 with 2 triples and 2 doubles. The Giants' run production came from the heart of their order, Casey Stengel and Jack Fournier splitting 6 hits and 8 RBKIs, while Cy Williams homered and drive in 2. [boxscore] Wild Card Series [results] Grackles defeat Whoopies 4-3 Benedicts defeat Wendigos 4-0 October 8, 1920 Galesburg, IL (WBSP): Aces Art Nehf and Howard Ehmke faced off in a Game 7 pitcher's duel, with Nehf getting the edge and punching the Grackles' ticket to the Doubleday LCS. Nehf went all nine, giving up a run on 9 hits. The Whoopies only run came in the ninth when Walter Barbare's 2-out single scored Bob Meusel. Despite the shutout slipping away, Nehf was his own hero, collecting the walkoff single driving in Cy Perkins. [boxscore] October 4, 1920 Button Bay, VT (WBSP): Button Bay took the series sweep today, defeating Willston 11-4. Rogers Hornsby and Steve O'Neill unleashed big bats, Hornsby tripling twice and scoring 3 runs and O'Neill homering, driving in 3, and scoring 4 times. The Benedicts will head south to Georgetown where they hope their momentum will help them upset the heavily favored Giants. [boxscore] October 1, 1920 Williston, ND (WBSP): Charlie Grimm lead the way for the Benedicts, collecting 3 hits including a double, a triple, and 6 RBIs, as the Benedcits secure a 2-0 lead to carry the Knickerbocker Wild Card series back to Button Bay's home turf. [boxscore] September 27, 1920 Chanute, KS (WBSP): Burleigh Grimes spread out 11 Chanute hits today, pitching all 9 innings, allowing 2 unearned runs, and finishing 24-6 with a 2.90 ERA on the season. The win clinched the final playoff spot, and the Whoopies will travel to Galesburg to face the Grackles in the Doubleday League Wild Card Series. In the Knickerbocker League Wild Card Series, the Wendigos will host the Benedicts. [boxscore] September 25, 1920 Chanute, KS (WBSP): Irish Meusel and Lefty Williams came through for the Whoopies today, winning 5-1 and forcing a one-game playoff with Chanute. Meusel drove in 3 on a single and a couple of sacrifice hits. Lefty William threw a complete game, giving up a run on 7 hits to finish the season with a 13-20 record. [boxscore] September 24, 1920 Chanute, KS (WBSP): Chanute overtook Macon for 3rd place today, setting up a showdown for tomorrow. The Athletics won 6-5, thanks to a leadoff triple in the 9th by Edd Roush followed later by Aaron Ward's bases-loaded, walk-off grounder to drive in Roush. Chanute came in to the series a game behind Macon. Tomorrow's winner will determine the third playoff spot in the Doubleday League. If Chanute wins, they claim third place outright. If Macon wins, both teams will finish tied for 3rd place! [boxscore] September 16, 1920 Amarillo, TX (WBSP): Texas clinched the Doubleday division today, defeating Galesburg 8-3. Jesse Haines pitched all 9, improvingto 24-10. The Tornados batting lineup spread the hits around, 7 of 9 batters either scoring or driving in runs. [boxscore] September 12, 1920 New Orleans, LA (WBSP): Macon beat New Orleans 7-4 today, creeping to a game back of the Rougarou in the Doubleday wild card race. Joe Dugan led the way for the Whoopies, on 3 hits and 2 runs. Lefty Williamsn improved to 11-20. Tomorrow Macon hopes to complete the series sweep and tie the Rougarou for the wild card position. [boxscore] September 5, 1920 Georgetown, TX (WBSP): The Giants eased past the Moosedogs today 7-2, claiming the Knickerbocker League title. Ferdie Schupp pitched a complete game for Giants, giving up 1 earned and improving to 16-9. Ross Youngs went 2-4 with a double, triple, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored, raising his average to .420 for the year. [boxscore] August 31, 1920 Blackwater, KY (WBSP): Today Babe Ruth belted his 50th homerun of the season with 4 RBIs, as the Outlaws outlasted the first-place Tornados 12-11 in 10 innings of play. Dave Bancroft's 2-run double with 2 outs in the top of the 9th tied it up for Texas, but Chick Fewster drove in Ruth with a walkoff single in the 10th. [boxscore] August 18, 1920 Raleigh, NC (WBSP): The Topeka Moosedogs cut deals for the future today, sending Joe Jackson to Texas and Eddie Cicotte to Button Bay in exhange for 2nd and 3rd round draft picks in the 1921 draft. Texas hopes the addition of Jackson will give the edge to lock in a trip to the World Series compete with the seemingly unstoppable Giants. Cicotte shores up the Benedicts' starting rotation, which should be enough to lock in a playoff spot. August 10, 1920 Georgetown, TX (WBSP): The Giants unloaded today, trouncing Button Bay 21-5. Cy Williams hit for the cycle, batting 4 for 5 with 5 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Ross Youngs also batted 4 for 5 and improved his average to .416 while Bill Doak improved to 18-4 with the win. The Giants are on their way to an historic season, with an 80-30 record and 18 1/2 games ahead of the 2nd place Wendigos. [boxscore] August 4, 1920 Georgetown, TX (WBSP): Dickey Kerr and Herb Pennock both pitched game gems today, but Kerr came out on top with a 1-hit shutout, leading the Giants to a 1-0 Dickey victory over the Barons and improving to 12-10 on the season. Pennock gave up 1 run on 6 hits, the only run coming off a Del Pratt solo shot in the first inning. [boxscore] July 24, 1920 New Orleans, NO (WBSP): The Grackles have surged ahead of Texas in the Doubleday League, enjoying a 5 hit shutout from Art Nehf today. Nehf improved to 14-5 on the season. [boxscore] July 21, 1920 Rivendell, ME (WBSP): Shoeless Joe Jackson hit for the cycle with 3 homeruns today, batting 5 for 5, scoring 3, and driving in 3, but that still was not enough to beat Rivendell. The Elves edges the Moosedogs 9-8 on Ralph Young's walkoff single in the ninth. [boxscore] July 14, 1920 Chanute, KS (WBSP): Larry Gardner smacked his first homer of the year and hit for the cycle today, leading the Rougarou to an 11-4 victory over the Athletics. Gardner batted 4 for 6, scoring 3 times and driving in 4. Hal Carlson pitched a complete game, improving to a modest 9-12. The Rougarou maintain a third place position in the Doubleday League, hoping for a return to the postseason. [boxscore] July 1, 1920 Topeka, KS (WBSP): Today the Doubledays exacted revenge on the Knickerbockers, winning a wild one 7-6 and knotting the Midscummer Classic series at 1-1. The Knickerbockers jumper out an early 4-0 lead, fueled by Rogers Hornsby's sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI triple in the third. But things fell apart for the Knickerbockers in the fifth and sixth innings, pitcher Carl Mays giving up all 7 of the Doubleday runs in a span of 2 innings, on 4 hits and 7 walks. Doubledays manager Kyle Pope named George Sisler game MVP for his clutch performance. Sisler batted 1-for-1, with a bases-loaded single and a bases loaded walk, a stolen base, 3 RBIs and a run scored. [boxscore] June 18, 1920 Topeka, KS (WBSP): Today Jim Bagby pitched 15 innings, throwing 200 pitches, in an 18-inning, 10-8 loss to the Starkville Bulldogs. For the Bulldogs, Joe Jackson batter 4 for 6, maintaining above the .400 mark. [boxscore] Boston, MA (WBSP): The Outlaws crushed the Kings in a 15-0 blowout today, fueled by Walkter Holke batting 6 for 6 with 6 RBIs and Babe Ruth going 4 for 4, picking up his 25th homer of the year. [boxscore] May 11, 1920 Blackwater, KY (WBSP): Babe Ruth's homerun in the eight off Rougarou ace Jack Quinn cinched the win for the cellar-dwelling Outlaws. Ruth is on a tear in May, with 10 homeruns in the month so far. The win is the fourth in a row for Blackwater, a much needed boost after a dismal six-win April. [boxscore] April 26, 1920 Amarillo, TX (WBSP): Tornados' rookie Gus Bono ripped through Kinnaird Street bats today, pitching a 1-hit shutout in his WBS debut. The King's lone hit came from Russ Wrightstone in the seventh inning.
